My husband fell down the stairs this weekend. Now don't you want something that sturdy in your home.Best of all when the gate was broken this weekend a quick call to Babies-R-Us confirmed that they had a replacement in store. Because we just replaced the gate. We've had this gate in use at home for a year. For my money, this gate is one of the best on the market. Never once has said toddler managed to open the gate or do damage to it.
My toddler has stood on the bottom rail of the gate and shaken it numerous times in the past year.
Thankfully he wasn't injured more than just a couple bruises.
The second gate fit into the wall hardware exactly the same as the original gate had.
So why write a review now.
An hour later I'd driven to the store, purchased the gate, and installed the replacement into the existing undamaged wall bracket hardware.
He did however break the closed baby gate at the bottom of the stairs when he fell against it.
The gate didn't disengage, but a couple of the wooden slats on it were broken off the bottom railing.Think about that folks; it took the weight of an adult man falling against the gate to cause it to break.
I didn't need to fiddle or adjust any tension settings the way I have with other gates in the past.
Reliable every time and a great price.
I love this gate. The pressure mounted gates are scary because he pushes them over or tries to climb up the criss-cross pattern. My son is a little wild man. He is a year old and loves to climb on and shake the gate and I feel like he is safe doing it with this one. It also looks nice. Another plus is that when you don't need it for a while, you can slide the gate (with some force) up and out of the brackets on the wall.
My 1 year old son likes to climb up other gates but he can't do that with this one. This gate is affordable and works well. I bought this for the top of our stairs and I'm going to buy another one for the bottom of our stairs. Installation can be a little tricky (especially if the area you are blocking is uneven) but my husband made it work. This is a safe and nice looking gate.
The only downside is that I've pinched my finger in the latch a few times, but it was no big deal. That being said, it installs very well whether your walls are square or not.
I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old and neither of them, with all their climbing and shaking, can get this gate to budge. First of all, this gate is very SECURE.
It is hard for strangers to open the first time, but I think that's mainly because our walls aren't straight and there's more tension than there would be in well-framed houses. Next, it's so easy to take down.
If you are having company over and want the gate gone for awhile, it just slides in and out of the clips you install in the wall. The latch is very easy for me to open with one hand and it only took a couple of tries to become adept at it.
Overall, this gate is so sturdy and safe, I prefer it much more to the tension-mounted one I had before.
It is at the top of our staircase and remains closed when we're asleep so the kids don't accidentally fall down the stairs in the dark. Now that the kids are 4.5 years old, we have sold all the other gates. When we prepared for our twin babies in 2004, we bought several types of gates for our stairs and other places in the house. It wouldn't stop you if you tried to run through it, because the wooden uprights aren't that strong. Most of the others had design problems (one even had to be returned when it broke). But we still use this one daily and it works as well as the first day. Otherwise it's excellent. The metal latch is exceptionally good and given that it's near the bedrooms I appreciate that it can be opened and closed noiselessly if you're careful.
